Philosophy of Computers for Change
“To promote positive change in the community through affordable laptops, eCycling, and computer donations.”
Nowadays everything is done online, whether it be looking for a job, car or an apartment. To help level the playing field we offer affordable laptops to the community in order for them to stay current in this age of technology. We also are an eCycle company, taking donations/purchases of broken, used, old laptops. This helps keep what would often times be someone’s trash out of the landfills. Additionally we give back to the community, in the form of donations of computers, we have an ever growing base of schools, nonprofits, and charities that benefit from these programs.
What we do for the community
Provide inexpensive laptops to the community
We sell a $199 laptop that is ideal for getting a job and office type work.
Donate laptops to the community
We have an ever growing base of schools, nonprofits, and charities that benefit from our computer donations.
Quick solutions to broken computers with data
We offer trade-in credit for used, old, and broken laptops to put towards a refurbished one from our shelves, and then can help transfer any data from the old machine to the new one for free. This is all done in the same day or within the next business day depending on the volume of service work we have.
What we DO NOT do for the community
Not a genius bar/help desk in person or phone
Computers for Change intentionally chooses to not offer a help desk or phone support option, we choose to recommend computer technicians in the community that specialize in the field. We do this so that we can focus on our core mission of providing inexpensive and refurbished computers to the community and donating computers to charities. We don’t have enough time and manpower to do both.
No virus removal
We do not do virus removal. It is too unreliable to do a good job without screwing up the software and no way to guarantee that we have removed every single virus. What we do offer is a fresh install of the OS, and the files backed up to another hard drive.
No DC jack repair
We do not do DC Jack repair. It is too unreliable and often there is more wrong with the laptop besides the DC Jack. We offer to buy these computers and take our chances with them.
No loan/rent of laptops
We do not loan or rent out laptops. Rent-a-Center offers this service for PC’s.
About the Owner
I am Sam Jones an 8th generation Vermonter, UVM Grad & Alumni, and Burlington Rotarian.
I have been running Computers for Change, your local computer shop which is in its 5th year, running a business is, as i have found out, very hard and i work on average over 80hrs a week. In addition to that Computers for Change has a philosophy which matches my philosophy and that of many other Vermonters and local area businesses, "Giving back to the community". We donate many computers back to the community in efforts to help folks whom are less fortunate.
